RE: Module 32 – Unit 4 – Activity 1

Grade 8 Foreign Teacher PLC Meeting

Attendees: All foreign homeroom teachers

·       8H1 – Shane

·       8H2 – Will

·       8R1 – Heidi

·       8R2 – Norman

·       8R3 - Steven

Agenda: Monthly exam results, new external testing system, homeroom issues, alleged bullying issues, reward ceremony.

First on the agenda was evaluating the monthly exam scores. We identified that the 2 honors classes performed exceptionally well but the 3 regular classes under performed in almost all subjects. 8R2 averaging less then all 4 other classes overall.

After brainstorming we cam up with the following solutions that could potentially lead to higher grades in the finals

·       we would start using our evening mentoring time to tutor these students in each teachers subject area.

·       We will also start offering Friday afternoon tutoring sessions to the lower students performing  students of each regular class.

·       We would change the assessments given to the regular classes by adding more projects, presentations and research assignments. These would go towards the final grades and would make the exam have less weight.

·       This would also be in alignment with a similar  program we started last month we here we formed a Young Leaders Society (YLS) program which involves taking the top students of each honors class and giving them extra time where they can work on more challenging assignments.

Next we discussed issues that are happening in each individual home room and how these could be potentially affecting the student grades. One common issue, especially in the regular classes is bullying amongst students. This negative atmosphere leads to a lot of students feeling uncomfortable and not concentrating on their studies like they should be which is potentially bringing the average grades down. We decided as a group that we would use this weeks citizen education on Friday to talk about bullying and its negative impacts on students and school culture
